A famous video of a wanderer being chased by a hound. Taken in the early 1960s or late 1950s.

Hounds are a dog-like robotic entity found in most levels of The Backrooms.

Description

Hounds are a dog-like cybernetic organism, classified in the genus Canis Lupus, along with dogs and wolves.

Appearance

Although they may look like dogs from far away, hounds are nothing like dogs. While they have the body plan of a dog and are thought to be dogs at birth, they are mostly robotic. Their skeleton is identical to a dog's, although is completely metal. Their organs are known to be actual dog organs, although they are covered in a metal sheath. They have no true skin, but pieces of furry dog skin cover parts of their body in patches. However, most people agree that the strangest part of a hound's body is their head. Their skulls are the only parts of their body where their bones remain, although it is slightly different from that of a dog skeleton. Below their head, there is a thick layer of fur.

Their skull itself lacks any skin or fur, being raw bones exposed to the surface. They have a nasal cavity, but no nose. Their eyes seemingly don't exist at first glance, although they glow bright white in the dark, and are deep inside their skull, making their vision rather poor. Their lower jaw is nothing like that of a dog. Both sides of their jaw have large, serrated teeth, capable of tearing up almost anything. Their bottom jaw is slightly bigger than their upper jaw, and their canine teeth stick out of their mouth. This leads to their bite being extremely painful and destructive.

Another thing of note is that the little skin they have is patchy and thin, which is signs of malnutrition. It is like this no matter how much a hound is fed.

Social behaviours

Hounds were, for the longest time, thought to have been completely solitary creatures. Their reproductive habits were unclear, and they were rarely seen together. However, this changed in early 2018.

The Hive

Main article: The Hive

On April 28th, 2018, a MEGBRC user named “Toyguia” posted information about a secret level called “The Hive”. According to them, this level seemingly resembled a large, red “hive”, filled with caves and seemingly made of flesh. This level was infested with entities, including clumps, dullers, and bursters. In the centre part of the level, there was an entity which Toyguia referred to as “The High Queen”, who was supposedly a giant worm that laid eggs, which hatched into hounds. She also described these hounds as mostly-regular dogs at birth, where The High Queen used its thousands of legs to rapidly transform these dogs into hounds. Once the transformation is complete, they became highly hostile towards humans.

The M.E.G. took notice of this almost instantly. Many officials were sceptical of it at first, but on May 7th, 2018, it was revealed that “Toyguia” was actually Eve Anderson, a high-ranking M.E.G. official. She was found in a corner in Level 171, shivering in fear. When she was returned to Level 11, she reported that she wrote The Hive entry in a hurry, although the information was accurate. An experienced Backrooms explorer, she described The Hive as “The worst thing I have ever seen in The Backrooms. I'm pretty sure other people have been here before, but didn't make it out alive.”

Level 11 behaviours

Much like facelings, hounds also exhibit strange behaviour in Level 11 known as “The 11 Effect”. However, unlike facelings, hounds have not been known to exhibit this behaviour in other levels.

Hounds in Level 11 act very similar to dogs in The Frontrooms, the only difference being appearance. Most facelings in the level keep them as pets. It is rare for wanderers to keep hounds as pets in Level 11, although it is safe and has been done. Due to anatomical changes, the hounds in Level 11 don't bark, although they don't make occasional electric noises like regular hounds.

Unlike facelings, hounds with “The 11 Effect” revert to their normal behaviour upon leaving Level 11. This leads scientists to believe that something in Level 11 disables The High Queen's hive mind, although it is not present in any other level.

Biology

Habitats

Hounds are most common on levels 1, 2, and 3, much like skin-stealers. They can also be found on most other quantum-stable positive levels. However, for widely-debated reasons, they are almost never seen on levels above Level 12.

Diets

Much like the wolves they descend from, hounds are carnivores, eating small creatures from The Frontrooms, death rats, and facelings. However, they seem to have an affinity for wanderers. When hunting, hounds are easily frightened, and will almost never attack wanderers who are well-armed. They also do not stalk their prey. Even poorly-armed wanderers can deter hounds from attacking them by staring them down. This method only works for a few seconds, although running and then turning a corner will confuse hounds, and cause them to not pursue. Due to this, hounds are seen as one of the weaker entities in The Backrooms.

Anatomy

Toyguia's report of The Hive states that hounds are modified dogs, and therefore have the same anatomy. Hounds were always believed to have cybernetic origins, however. Internally, hound anatomy is like that of dogs. Hounds, lacking proper vasculature and instead getting energy from electricity, have no heart, lungs, or circulatory system. Their stomach is able to turn atoms into pure energy, which is then used to power their body via the intestines. Their brain is perhaps the strangest part of their anatomy. Hound dissection has revealed that a worm or worm-like creature is burrowed into their brain. Now, it is thought that these are tiny parts of The High Queen that she gave to the hound in order to control their mind. These worms are dark red, parasitic, and have regenerative properties. Many scientists think that The High Queen is an annelid, rather than a cestode or roundworm.

Reproduction

Hound reproduction was a mystery for many years. Common hypotheses were that hounds were built by a factory on an unknown level, a dog subjected to the effects of The Backrooms (similar to insanities), or appeared for no reason. However, hounds are now known to be born as dogs from eggs inside The Hive, then transformed into hounds by The High Queen. Since they are mostly robotic, hounds are infertile, and do not age.

Dos and Don'ts

Do

  • Stare at a hound if it approaches you, then run away.
  • Attempt to avoid hounds.

Don't

  • Run away from hounds instantly, or do anything else that might make you look weak.
  • Attempt to tame or befriend hounds.
  • Touch hounds without proper protective equipment.
